West Virginia Targets Record Tourism Numbers with Robust Winter Season

West Virginia is poised for a potentially record-breaking tourism year, with officials encouraging travelers to experience the state’s diverse winter offerings. Governor Patrick Morrisey recently highlighted the economic benefits of winter tourism, emphasizing its role in supporting jobs and strengthening communities.

State Prepares for 18.5 Million Visitors

The state anticipates welcoming over 18.5 million visitors this winter season, building on a year of unprecedented growth. Earlier in the year, West Virginia surpassed $9.1 billion in annual tourism economic impact, fueled by 77.2 million visitors who spent $6.6 billion – a 28 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic levels. This surge in tourism activity generated $1.1 billion in tax revenue and supported nearly 61,000 jobs across the state.

Ski Resorts Lead the Charge

The 2025-26 ski season kicked off earlier this month with openings at Timberline Mountain on December 4, Snowshoe Mountain on December 5, and Winterplace Ski Resort on December 6. Currently, all five of West Virginia’s ski resorts are fully operational, boasting excellent conditions for skiers and snowboarders.

Winterplace Ski Resort was recently recognized by USA Today as the best place to learn how to ski and a premier destination for snowtubing. The state’s resorts offer a range of experiences:

  • Timberline: Features over 20 trails and a high-speed six-person chairlift.
  • Snowshoe: Boasts more than 60 skiing and snowboarding routes, alongside snowtubing, horse-drawn carriage rides, and a vibrant village with shops and restaurants.
  • Winterplace: Provides nearly 30 trails, two terrain parks, and the state’s longest snowtubing run.

“We’ve been able to give travelers an early taste of authentic skiing right here in the Mountain State,” said a representative from the West Virginia Department of Tourism. “With experienced instructors and beginner-friendly terrain, our wonderful resorts make Almost Heaven, West Virginia, one of the best places in the country to learn to ski.”

Beyond the Slopes: A Winter Wonderland

West Virginia’s winter appeal extends far beyond skiing and snowboarding. Families can enjoy dazzling holiday light displays, experience the magic of the Polar Express, and glide along snowy trails at the White Grass Ski Touring Center. Adventure seekers can explore the Hatfield-McCoy Trails for off-roading, discover breathtaking frozen waterfalls in state parks, or race down the Blackwater Falls Sled Run – the East Coast’s longest sled run, opening December 18.
