Every year, words leave the major dictionaries… to make way for others. Larousse and Robert have given themselves the mission of reflecting a living and, in essence, changing language. This is how in 2024, each of the two works has sanctified more or less 150 new words. We have selected 15 for you.
The environment in the spotlight
The environment may have been a concern of ours for a long time, but it is increasingly becoming a part of public debate. Logically, the terms devoted to it multiply, for example:
- Aquaponics: not a sea pony, but a method of food production.
- Ecoanxiety: If the future of the planet terrifies you, you are “ecoanxious.”
- Megabasin: don’t look for one for washing dishes, they are used to store water for agriculture.
- Microplastic: as their name suggests, plastic particles invisible to the naked eye.
- Rewilding: it might sound like a far-right term for suburbs, but it’s actually spaces reclaimed by nature.
The increasing number of anglicisms
Every year, lexicologists are faced with the same dilemma: which “undocumented” English words should be given French nationality? This year, the lucky winners are, among others:
- Crush: a crush.
- Flexoffice: a nomadic workspace.
- Ghosting: ignoring someone without telling them.
- Greenwashing: for a polluting company, give itself an eco-friendly image.
- Webtoon: a comic book designed to be read on a smartphone.
