Pilot Checklists: Ensuring Safety and Mission Success
New Delhi: The Indian Air Force boasts a fleet of powerful fighter jets, inspiring awe and respect from potential adversaries. Behind the might of these aircraft lies meticulous preparation and a rigorous pre-flight checklist followed by pilots. This checklist ensures the safety and effectiveness of each mission.
Mission Planning and Briefing
Before taking off, pilots meticulously plan the mission’s objectives, including practice flights, patrols, or combat missions. They meticulously study weather conditions, identifying wind speed, direction, temperature, and cloud coverage. This information guides the selection of the optimal air route and airspace. Additionally, pilots receive vital information regarding emergency procedures.
External Inspection
Before takeoff, pilots conduct a thorough inspection of the aircraft’s exterior. They meticulously check the wings, fuselage, and air surfaces for cracks, damage, or abnormalities. Any leaks of hydraulic fluid or other issues are promptly identified. Additionally, the landing gear and tires are inspected for damage or pressure problems. Fuel tanks and the engine are also examined for any anomalies. The radar, navigation system, and communication equipment are thoroughly checked for functionality. The battery and electrical system are also assessed.
Internal Inspection
Inside the cockpit, pilots assess the condition of the cockpit seat, ejection seat system, and control stick and throttle. All flight instruments, such as the attitude indicator, speedometer, and altimeter, are meticulously verified. The communication setup is also inspected.
System Check
Before flight, pilots confirm the status of GPS and other navigation systems. The functionality of radar and other sensors is verified. If the mission involves combat, the status and safety of the weapon system are also checked.
Once all checks are complete, the pilot requests clearance from ATC and takes off, confident that their meticulous preparation has ensured a safe and successful mission.
