Everyone expects to experience relaxation and stress relief during a massage. However, one woman’s day at the spa allegedly left her feeling like she was “skinned alive.”
In a viral video with over 894,400 views, TikTok user Kim’s Chronicles (@kimschonricles) issued a warning about a specific type of massage called Gua sha. Allegedly, the treatment was painful and left her with wounds that took days to heal. “For all of you people on this app that get massages, you need to know this,” she began in the clip. She urged viewers to “run for your life” if a massage therapist ever recommends Gua sha.
What is Gua sha?
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese treatment that involves scraping the skin with a tool to increase circulation. Practitioners believe that stagnant energy, referred to as chi, can be broken up and dispersed through this method, potentially alleviating inflammation and other ailments.
Some studies have found benefits associated with Gua sha therapy. One study indicated that the treatment improved circulation for approximately 25 minutes. Participants in another study reported reductions in muscle pain following Gua sha treatment.
Is Gua sha safe?
In her TikTok clip, Kim reported feeling a burning sensation in her back after the treatment. “I’m telling you right now, it is skinning you alive,” she stated. “I’m not exaggerating. It was so painful.” Upon returning home, she asked her daughter to take a picture of her back, revealing that it appeared pink and inflamed. She expressed frustration, noting she had been pressured into the treatment when all she wanted was a regular massage.
“Learn from my mistake,” she cautioned. “Do not do what I did.” According to Healthline.com, Gua sha typically does not cause pain but can lead to temporary skin changes. Rubbing and scraping can cause capillaries to burst, resulting in redness or bruising that usually resolves within a few days.
In the comments section of Kim’s TikTok video, viewers shared mixed reactions regarding Gua sha. Some users highlighted the benefits, with one commenting, “Gua sha. Super painful but it’s a legit thing.” Another user recalled their mother using Gua sha when they were sick, noting, “It’s painful asf but I always get better.”
Conversely, others voiced their concerns about the treatment. “With fibromyalgia, I could neverrrr,” wrote one individual, while another remarked, “Oh my goodness, Kim. That looks so painful.”
