Although the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) is a mandatory procedure, there is also the possibility of going to an ITV station to carry out a preventive technical inspection of a certain vehicle. This procedure is called voluntary ITV. And this can be a key tool when buying a pre-owned vehicle, according to the Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles, AECA-ITV. This allows the buyer to assure that the vehicle they are going to acquire is in good condition and allows the seller to offer a guarantee of its proper functioning.

“Although in the case of this event, the cars that are presented there have the maximum guarantees, the truth is that the vast majority of used car sales are made between individuals, so this type of inspection is more important », has assured Guillermo Magazmanaging director of AECA-ITV.

On some occasions, used cars can present complex problems that are not detected with the naked eye and that can only be identified through a complete check such as the one carried out by ITV stations that includes: the engine, lighting, brakes, gas emissions, among other systems. Also, through this type of inspection, it can be detected, for example, if the vehicle has any reforms that are not legalized.

Specifically, there are two types of voluntary ITV: the complete one, such as the one that is carried out on a mandatory and periodic basis for all vehicles; and partial, which means that only the correct functioning of a specific element or system of the vehicle is checked, for example, the brakes, steering or emissions.

The prices of the operations in the technical inspections of vehicles vary in each Autonomous Community, so that depending on the season you will have different rates. But from AECA-ITV they report that voluntary ITVs usually have a lower price than mandatory operations. Of course, it must be taken into account that in the event that a serious or very serious defect is detected in the inspection, we would have to act exactly the same as in the mandatory ITV: we would have to solve the problem and return to verify the good general condition of the vehicle. car.
