What is Maundy Thursday? Understand the meaning of the day

by time news

In the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, one of the most important periods for Christian believers. Although very popular, the date is not nationally recognized as a holiday in Brazil. Celebrated this year on March 28, the date marks the end of Lent, remembers the last supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples and begins the Easter Triduum.

Among the rites that highlight the date, there is Foot Washing, a practice that dates back to Jesus’ own action washing the feet of his disciples as a symbol of humility and service.

During the Holy Thursday mass, which recalls the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper, this gesture is recreated, emphasizing values of solidarity and service to others. On this day, Catholic churches do not usually ring bells.

The story in the Bible also tells that Maundy Thursday is marked by the episode of Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, followed by his subsequent crucifixion. Next, Holy Week celebrates the passion and death, an occasion in which Christians remember the painful events that culminated in the crucifixion of Jesus.

During this period, the faithful dedicate themselves to prayer and contemplation, awaiting the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which occurs on Easter Sunday. This wait culminates in the Easter Vigil, celebrated during Saturday night, where Christians welcome the resurrection of Christ with joy and hope.

Therefore, Maundy Thursday is not just a commemorative date in the Christian calendar, but a time of deep spiritual significance, which invites us to reflect on the teachings of Christ and renew our faith in his message of love and redemption.
