Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) represents only 0.5% of the cancer burden worldwide, the truth is that its prevalence will increase as the population ages. The survival of people with HL has increased, fundamentally, as a result of recent therapeutic innovations, globally changing the epidemiological panorama of this disease.

More than 10% of Hodgkin lymphoma cases occur in Latin America

Most incident cases and deaths due to Hodgkin lymphoma occur in developing countries. More than 10% of incident cases and deaths occur in Latin America, a region that lacks adequate epidemiological surveillance systems for non-communicable diseases.

Some countries such as Mexico do not have follow-up studies or cancer registries to directly consult the incidence and mortality of Hodgkin lymphoma. What is clear is that it could be expected that the HL burden will vary between different Mexican health institutions.

Rates are higher in men than in women

Incidence rates of HL are 32 percent higher in men than in women. In both sexes, they had a bimodal distribution; the highest rates occurred in people aged 60 years or older, followed by adults between 20 and 24 years old. After the age of 50, exponential growth was observed. Children under 15 years of age experienced the lowest incidence rates of HL.

In Mexico, lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer in Mexico. There are four subtypes of HL, the most common is known as nodular sclerosis. In pediatric age, Hodgkin lymphoma occurred in 10.7% in the age group between 4 and 8 years, reaching third place in importance, also reporting a significant predominance in the male sex in a ratio of 4:1 .
