You park your car in a blue zone without putting in the ticket, or on a street restricted to traffic for just a few minutes to run an errand. But when you come back your car is gone. It is not surprising that the municipal tow truck or the service contracted by the City Council on duty remove our vehicle from the road. Some examples are, for example, when the vehicle poses a danger or causes serious traffic problems. This involves both the circulation of people and vehicles or public transport. The same will happen if it is deteriorating public assets.

If the vehicle is involved in an accident that prevents it from continuing, you will have to move the vehicle; or even when a vehicle is immobilized due to deficiencies, you will have a period of 48 hours to solve them. If not, while the vehicle is on public roads, it will be taken to the warehouse.

Also when the authorities detect a vehicle that is circulating without insurance, they will proceed to immobilize it. The tow truck will then take it away. Or when the offender refuses to deposit or guarantee payment of the amount of the fine.

Likewise, when a vehicle is deregistered, it cannot circulate either. It is one more case in which it will be in the hands of the municipal crane. And if a vehicle parked for more than a month in the same place can be considered abandoned. And, if after leaving warnings on the car, it does not move or has serious damage that prevents its mobilization, it will be moved to the depot by a tow truck.

Quick action

In the event that the tow truck takes your car, the most important thing is to act as quickly as possible since, with each hour that the car spends in the municipal tow truck depot, the amount to pay will increase.

Thus, the first thing to do is locate where they have taken it. Sometimes the operator leaves a sticker attached to the floor, sign or nearest wall, which indicates the tank where your vehicle has gone, the license plate and a contact telephone number. If this does not happen, it is best to make a call to the municipal information telephone number.

Normally, if we provide the license plate number, they will tell us which warehouse the car is in, the amount we will have to pay to collect it, and the price per hour of parking. They will also tell us the documentation that we must show to proceed with its withdrawal. If it is a private vehicle, our DNI or driving license will be sufficient if the car is in our name, and if it is in another person’s name, we will also need a photocopy of the owner’s DNI and an authorization signed by the owner. If it is a company car, we will need the original deeds of the car, authorization from the representative and a photocopy of the company’s ID.

The amount to be paid (withdrawal fee) will depend on the location, but can range from less than 70 euros in cities such as Badajoz, Guadalajara or Gijón to 152 euros in San Sebastián or Valencia; or the 180 euros of Zaragoza.

Once you arrive at the depot and are allowed to see your car, it is advisable to check its condition to report any possible damage it may have suffered during the transfer. If this is the case, record this in a written complaint and take photos as proof and subsequently claim their repair from the municipal service.

If you get to the car before the tow truck takes the vehicle. In these cases the process, and the cost, is much more bearable since, in some cases, the price of the fee (which in this case is called the interruption fee) It is half and in others it does not involve any cost (except perhaps the fine for improper parking) as is the case of Barcelona, Huelva or Tarragona.
