When you are older **

by Andréa Bescond and Éric Métayer

French film, 1 h 39

“My parents don’t care about me. – We are our children who have nothing to do with us. » Two weaknesses, two loneliness. Brieuc, ten years on the clock, consoles himself on his skateboard for the indifference of parents always in a hurry, the smartphone screwed to his ear. Residents of an Ehpad, Gigi and Yvon have not had any visits from their children for two years.

This old couple and Brieuc should never have met. But while waiting for the school canteen to reopen, the mayor has decided that the students will take their meals at the town’s retirement home. A decision that revolts Yannick (Vincent Macaigne), an already overwhelmed caregiver, as much as Aude (Aïssa Maïga), the leader of the group of children shocked by this forced cohabitation.

Between comedy and social Time.news

After tickles, doubly rewarded at the Césars, which recounted the sexual assaults she had suffered in childhood, Andréa Bescond returns to the cinema with her companion, Éric Métayer. Choral story, the film which hesitates between comedy, social Time.news, tragedy, sometimes struggles to find its tone. When you are older embraces a multitude of subjects, at the risk of confusion. With Yannick and his colleagues, he shows the difficulties of working in a retirement home due to the lack of staff and insufficient budgets.

It is also attached, it will be understood, to the isolation of the elderly, without a visit in six cases out of ten – Andréa Bescond reserves a probably autobiographical scene in this regard. And then, there is at the heart of the story the meeting between generations, with the link woven by Brieuc with Gigi and Yvon (whose one wonders, as for other residents, what justifies his placement in nursing home). The youngest put stars in the eyes of the elders, who suddenly reveal forgotten memories and talents.

Without reaching the power of Ticklingit nevertheless blows an invigorating wind on When you are older. The replies hit home, the emotions are expressed in all forms, including the dance so dear to Andréa Bescond and the joyful cries of rage after exhausting days of work. Tenderness irrigates this film crossed by real moments of grace and carrying a humanist message, attention to the most vulnerable.
