The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, strongly criticized the international community for ignoring the tragedy of the Syrian people as a result of the earthquakes, asking: Where is the humanity?

In a tweet he posted on Thursday, the day after his visit on Wednesday to the Idlib governorate affected by the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria in early February, Ghebreyesus said: “The international community has forgotten about Syria…the situation is deplorable, 12 years of war, economic collapse, the Corona epidemic, drought, and now the earthquake.” .

He continued, “Everyone can imagine the extent of the horror that the Syrian people are going through… Where is the humanity?”

On February 6, two earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 degrees occurred in southern Turkey and northern Syria, and thousands of aftershocks caused great losses in lives and property in both countries.

“I can’t stop thinking about the people I met at this reception centre,” Ghebreyesus wrote. They desperately need better living conditions, regular meals, basic hygiene and access to school.”

And he added, “If this is not the case, the health of their children will deteriorate rapidly. Medicines can only do so much in such an environment.”
