There are those who are from Real Madrid, Atlético, Barcelona, or Valencia. But there are also many people who are Mahou. The beer brand that was born on Amaniel Street in Madrid back in 1890 has a legion of followers, not only in Madrid.
And, as happens with the tortilla, there are those who like it with onion or without onion, these followers are torn between the Classic Mahou (the one popularly known as the green one) or the Mahou Five Stars (the Red).
This is because of the color of their labels. But beyond this aesthetic detail, there are a series of characteristics that differentiate one from the other. For example, alcoholic volume. Even the price. But there is more. And one of them has to do with calories.
What are the differences between the red and green Mahou?
Before going into detail about the difference in calories, it is convenient to define both the Classic Mahou and the Five Star. The brewing company defines green in this way on its website: “From Golden colour, bright appearance and moderate body, stands out for its smooth flavor and good balance in the mouth. Its aroma is light, fruity, with floral hop tones.”
While the red one is characterized by being “a golden beer, of creamy foam and consistent, with a characteristic, moderate and fine flavor, with a fruity aroma.” A cocktail that translates into “a good balance of taste that persists on the palate.”
Other differences? The red one has a dry extract greater than or equal to 13% by mass but without reaching 15%; while, in the green one, said extract is less than 13%. For the layman, the primitive dry extract is the amount of fermentable sugars that are present in the fermentation of beer.
And what does that mean? The greater the primitive dry extract the beer has, the greater the density, body and flavor will be.
Which Mahou has the most calories?
A calorie is a unit of energy. AND, per se, They are not bad. The body needs calories for energy. But when you consume more calories than your body uses, that extra energy is usually stored as fat.
Having made this clarification, it is time to answer the question. Both the Classic Mahou and the Cinco Estrellas are made from water, barley malt, corn and hops. But while the green one has 4.8% alcohol by volume, the red one reaches 5.5%. Therefore, the first is softer while the second has a greater intensity.
Regarding calories, the Classic Mahou has a value of 30 kilocalories (kcal) per 100 milliliters (ml). For its part, Mahou Cinco Estrellas has a value of 49 kcal for every 100 ml. It is not the only difference in nutritional value between one and the other.
Thus, and regarding carbohydrates, the green one has a value of 2.3 grams per 100 ml. Of them, 0.1 are sugars. In the case of red, the value is 3.9 grams per 100 ml. Of them, 0.1 are sugars. The latter has a value of 0.4 grams of protein per 100 ml, compared to 0.3 grams of protein in the green one.
