The World Health Organization (WHO) has again asked China to share current medical data about the corona outbreak. This concerns data on vaccinations, virus variants, hospital admissions, IC admissions and deaths.

This data should help China and the rest of the world to make good risk assessments and, if necessary, to come up with effective measures, the WHO said in a statement.

After almost three years of an extremely strict corona policy, China loosened the reins on December 7. According to the Chinese government, 5,000 new infections are added every day. According to experts, there should be many more and nearly 250 million Chinese have become infected since the relaxation of corona policy.

New variants

Scientists warn that the outbreak could create new variants, which will then be taken abroad.

In connection with this, several countries are already checking whether travelers from China carry the virus, including Japan, the US, Spain, France and Italy. The WHO calls this understandable. The Netherlands offers Chinese people arriving at Schiphol a self-test.

Virologist Marion Koopmans said earlier this week that the situation in China is probably not very worrying for the Netherlands at the moment. According to her, the lack of openness about the virus in China is a point of attention.
