David Bustamante Opens Up About Weight Loss Journey and Public Scrutiny
A growing number of public figures are speaking out against body shaming and the pressures of maintaining a certain image, with singer David Bustamante the latest to share his experience. The artist recently detailed his significant 20-kilogram weight loss and the lifestyle changes that fueled it, while also acknowledging the harsh criticism he’s faced regarding fluctuations in his physique.
Over recent months, Bustamante has publicly addressed the relentless commentary surrounding his weight. This experience mirrors that of other prominent individuals, including Laura Escanes, who was subjected to negative comments about her appearance in photographs, and Paula Leitón, a water polo player who also faced similar scrutiny.
“When they see someone weak or in a grayer moment, what they do is put their foot on their neck,” Bustamante powerfully stated during an appearance on ‘La Revuelta’. “There is nothing sadder in this life than being cruel and mean and cowardly.” Now, having achieved a noticeably leaner physique, Bustamante has revealed the specifics of his transformation.
The cornerstone of his new regimen is a dramatically altered diet. “I don’t eat sweets. I eat very well, like more than ever, but I eat a very healthy diet,” he explained on David Broncano’s program. He also expressed a preference for a plant-based approach, stating, “I feel sorry for all animals; I prefer not to think about it. I eat a lot of fish.”
Bustamante attributes initial weight gain to quitting smoking, but has since adopted a strict lifestyle overhaul. “I have banished alcohol, sugars, carbohydrates and flour from my life… I only eat protein, healthy fats and vegetables. I don’t skip it even a day,” he confirmed, while currently touring with his ‘Inédito Tour’.
This dietary discipline is coupled with a rigorous exercise routine. Bustamante revealed he now rises between 5 and 6 a.m. each day for a one-hour walk on an empty stomach, followed by a gym session, breakfast, and then time in the studio with his musicians. He typically sets his alarm for 7:30 a.m., but consistently exceeds that schedule.
However, Bustamante’s restrictive diet has also drawn criticism. Experts caution against drastic food elimination without professional guidance. Dr. José Manuel Felices Farias noted on social media that food restriction “is a typical mistake,” emphasizing the importance of personalized approaches rather than blindly following trends or celebrity diets. It remains essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate measures for each individual.
Bustamante’s story underscores the complex relationship between public image, personal health, and the pervasive pressures faced by those in the spotlight. His openness about his journey serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and the potential pitfalls of adhering to unrealistic standards.
