Government figures show people are leaving New Zealand in record numbers due to rising unemployment, as economic growth is weak and interest rates high.
According to figures released by Statistics New Zealand, 131,200 people left New Zealand in the year ending June 2024, the highest number on record.
About 75 percent of people who emigrated from New Zealand, a country with a population of about 5.124 thousand, went to the neighboring country of Australia.
Of those who left New Zealand, 80,174 were New Zealand citizens, more than double the number who emigrated from New Zealand before Covid.
Although the number of immigrant arrivals is still high, economists expect that number to decline as the country loses its attractiveness due to the sluggish economy.
A record number of New Zealanders returned home during the coronavirus pandemic as the government, led by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, took effective measures to combat the pandemic.
New Zealand’s Central Bank Committee noted that domestic economic activity had weakened, which became more pronounced in July.

The bank noted that ‘economic indicators suggest that the economy is contracting faster than expected, with downside risks to output and employment now more evident’.
People are also frustrated by housing costs and low employment opportunities and are moving in large numbers to Australia, the UK and other countries.
In view of this situation, neighboring Australia is offering relocation packages to people seeking jobs in nursing, policing and teaching, where it faces a shortage of qualified personnel.
New Zealand, on the other hand, has also been cutting government jobs, putting many skilled workers out of a job.
