Elgato Introduces USB-C Cable with Built-In Specifications for User Convenience
In an effort to address the common issue of identifying the speed and type of USB-C cables, Elgato has released a teleprompter accompanied by a USB-C cable that displays its bandwidth and USB type directly on the connector. The development was first noticed by professional audio engineer Matt “Spike” McWilliams, who expressed his appreciation for this simple yet significant feature.
For those acquainted with the hassle of sorting USB-C cables based on their capabilities, Elgato’s solution is a much-needed relief. Prior to this innovation, users had to rely on testing each cable individually to discern their speed and charging capabilities. With Elgato’s clearly imprinted specifications, users can easily identify that the cable is USB 3.0 compatible and supports up to 5Gbps in bandwidth.
The USB Implementers Forum, a body responsible for establishing and promoting USB standards, already has a logo that manufacturers can use on packaging to indicate the cable’s capabilities. However, the effectiveness of this logo diminishes over time when users need to find specific cables from a jumble of different options. Moreover, some cables claiming certain capabilities on their packaging do not deliver on those promises in reality, leaving users frustrated and dissatisfied.
Elgato’s USB-C cable sets an example for the industry with its simplistic yet highly practical approach. Julian Fest, Senior Vice President at Elgato, revealed that this feature will be implemented across all Elgato USB and HDMI cables going forward. According to Fest, users will no longer have to guess whether a cable is the cause of a technical issue.
The incorporation of imprinted specifications directly on the USB-C connector is a step in the right direction. Users can now easily recognize the capabilities of their cables at a glance, saving time and frustration. As USB-C becomes increasingly prevalent, it is hoped that other manufacturers will follow Elgato’s lead and prioritize user convenience by adopting similar marking systems.
