Experts from the American Enterprise Institute’s Critical Threats Project are analyzing the failure of Iran’s missile and drone attack on Israel on the night of Sunday, April 14. In their opinion, Iran copied the tactics of *Russian strikes on Ukraine, but did not take into account the key differences between the conflicts.
Iran used a combination strike, starting with drones and then moving to cruise and ballistic missiles. However, analysts argue that the attack planning underestimated the strength of Israeli air defenses, which led to the low effectiveness of the attack.
Experts note that Israel’s defense advantages over Iran are significant. This includes more advanced air defense systems, the ability to quickly respond to an attack and access to hundreds of combat aircraft to shoot down drones long before they reach Israeli airspace.
An important factor, according to analysts, is that Iranian missiles are significantly less sophisticated than Russian ones, which played a role in limiting the damage from the attack.
Despite the failure, experts suggest Iran will learn from the experience and work to improve its ability to penetrate Israeli defenses, similar to what Russia is doing in Ukraine.
