Controversy arose on the 27th when Kim Min-seok, a senior member of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized Kim Tae-hyo, the first deputy director of the National Security Office of the President’s Office, for his harsh remarks, who were controversial for ‘refusing to salute the national flag’ during President Yoon Seok-yeol’s official visit to the Czech Republic. When Chief Kim, a close associate of Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, criticized him by using expressions such as ‘Jae-myeong’ and ‘crazy’, the People Power Party protested, saying, “The incident caused by a mistake is being used for political purposes.”
Chief Kim said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, “If Kim Tae-hyo followed the rules, are the president and others who saluted the national flag all idiots who broke the rules?” The day before, the President’s office raised the level of its offensive when it explained the controversy over the refusal to salute by saying, “It is a rule to stand at attention when the Taegeukgi is not visible,” and that it was a mistake that occurred because Deputy Director Kim could not find the Taegeukgi.
Senior Kim, along with Deputy Director Kim, grouped First Lady Kim Kun-hee, who was suspected of meddling in the general election nomination, President Yoon, and the Commander of the ROK Armed Forces Counterintelligence Command, Yeo Yeo-hyung, an alumnus of Chungam High School, saying, “If the three are not eliminated, Yoon, who tolerated and encouraged the manipulation of state affairs, pro-Japanese treason, and military disorder, will be punished.” He also said, “The president will step down.”
The People Power Party reacted to Chief Kim’s harsh remarks, saying, “It was an attempt to cover up Representative Lee’s judicial risks.” An official from the People Power Party said, “The Democratic Party is habitually using an old ‘pro-Japanese frame’ that does not work,” and added, “Even if they try to divert the public’s attention, they will not be able to cover up Representative Lee’s judicial risk.” The President’s Office is in the position that Deputy Minister Kim made a mistake by not saluting the national flag because he did not see the Taegeukgi.
Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party, mentioned that President Yoon said in 2021, “My wife (Mrs. Kim) is a person who memorizes the entire Old Testament,” and said, “If I had said (that I memorize the entire Old Testament), I think I would have been sentenced to about 5 years in prison.” He continued, “Stories like this are not actually subject to punishment and should be laughed off.” Just as saying ‘I memorize the Old Testament’ is not a crime, it is also not a crime to say, “I don’t know Kim Moon-ki,” which is the reason why the prosecution sentenced him to two years in prison.
