wicked: For Good’ to expand on Emotional Core with New Songs for Glinda and Elphaba
Teh highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film adaptation of the Broadway hit, Wicked, will delve deeper into the inner lives of its protagonists, Glinda and Elphaba, through the addition of two brand-new songs. Director Jon M. Chu revealed the decision stemmed from a desire to amplify the emotional weight of the story, particularly within the second act.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders London event, Chu shared his long-standing connection to Wicked, recalling seeing one of the musical’s earliest performances. He emphasized that the second act has always resonated with him most profoundly,considering it the “emotional core of the story.”
The director explained that he and his team sought to build upon the established themes of the stage musical,aiming to capture a similar level of emotional resonance on screen. “For me,what I think the second half needed was to know more about these individual women’s experiences,” Chu stated. “How lonely is it when you make a choice like that and you have to stand up to power and you feel like you’re the only one doing it. That’s a very heavy, lonely experience…”
He further elaborated on the complexities of Glinda’s character, questioning whether someone shielded by privilege could truly confront uncomfortable truths. “And what happens when you’re someone like Glinda who has this bubble of protection, where you don’t ever have to deal with the truth if you don’t want to. Are you able to pop your bubble of privilege? To me, those were the bigger questions of the Wicked saga.”
the inclusion of new songs,Chu clarified,wasn’t about spectacle but about forging a deeper emotional connection with the audience. “We needed more songs, because we needed more avenues into that mindset,” he explained.”Musicals are great because it’s not about being bigger,it’s about going deeper into these characters and minds and what they’re going through. So we have new songs that allow us to witness how they go through these thoughts, and the audience can experience.”
The new musical additions are “No Place Like Home,” performed by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and “The Girl in the bubble,” sung by Ariana Grande as Glinda. These tracks mark the first time new music has been added to a Wicked film adaptation that wasn’t part of the original Broadway score penned by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman.
Wicked: For Good will continue the narrative following the events of Wicked: Part One, adapting the second act of the 2003 stage production. the film will explore the consequences of Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West,Glinda’s ascent to power,and the evolving dynamic of their friendship amidst the political turmoil of Oz.
According to Chu, the new songs are crucial for portraying the internal struggles Glinda and Elphaba face alongside the external conflicts.He believes these moments will allow the screenplay and music to work in tandem, giving each witch a more complete and nuanced voice as they grapple with impractical choices.
Anticipation for Wicked: For Good is already exceptionally high. fandango recently reported that the film achieved the highest first-day ticket pre-sales of any movie slated for release in 2025, surpassing titles like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle, Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, and Superman.
The first installment,Wicked: Part one,debuted just before Thanksgiving 2024,earning $112.5 million domestically and grossing $756.4 million worldwide, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in cinematic history.
Wicked: For Good is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 21, 2025.
