Wild Trades: Zach Bogosian acquired, Calen Addison dealt to Sharks

by time news

The Minnesota Wild made a splash on Wednesday, acquiring defenseman Zach Bogosian from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick. The move came just hours after trading defenseman Calen Addison to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Adam Raska and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick.

Bogosian, 33, has yet to register a point in four appearances this season. Last year, he tallied four assists and one goal in 46 games. On the other hand, the 23-year-old Addison has five assists in 12 games this season and recorded 26 assists and three goals in 62 games last season. Raska, a 22-year-old native of the Czech Republic, has appeared in eight NHL games between the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

The Sharks were in need of a puck-moving defenseman, and Addison fits the bill. He should bring good vision in the attacking zone, skating mobility, and some creativity along the blue line. While there are some defensive weaknesses in his game, the Sharks are hopeful that he can bolster their power play and contribute to their future plans.

Meanwhile, the Wild were seeking to bolster their defensive depth and add some championship experience. Bogosian, who has been in and out of the Lightning lineup this year, is expected to slot into a third-pairing role with Minnesota. He brings a physical edge and experience on the penalty kill, along with a solid 53.2 Corsi For percentage in limited minutes this year.

From a cap perspective, the deals have minimal impact on the Wild’s situation. Bogosian’s cap hit is effectively replacing Addison’s, with just a $25,000 difference. And if the Wild activate Jared Spurgeon, then Daemon Hunt will likely be sent to AHL Iowa.

Sharks general manager Mike Grier expressed his excitement to add Addison to the team, citing his talent and ability to move the puck effectively. Overall, it seems that both teams have addressed specific needs with these transactions.

In the end, the Wild have added some veteran experience and defensive depth, while the Sharks have acquired a young puck-moving defenseman to support their future plans. It remains to be seen how these moves will impact both teams as the season progresses.
