Abilene Christian University’s men’s golf program has secured commitments from two of Texas’s top young golfers, Jaxson Henegar of Dallas and Matthew lewis of Arlington, head coach Tom Shaw announced last week. The additions are expected to significantly bolster the Wildcats’ roster as they prepare for the 2026 season.

Rising stars Commit to the Wildcats

The incoming class represents a significant investment in the future of Abilene Christian golf. Both Henegar and Lewis have demonstrated remarkable talent and a commitment to excellence both on and off the course.

Jaxson Henegar: A Breakthrough Talent

Jaxson Henegar, hailing from Woodrow Wilson High School, is currently ranked 209th nationally by the Rolex american Junior Golf Association. Within the state of Texas, he holds the 19th position and is considered the 103rd-ranked prospect in the class of 2026. Notably, Henegar ranks 13th amongst his fellow Texan recruits.

“Jaxson Henegar is a tremendous addition to our program,” Shaw stated. “He burst onto the scene this summer with notable finishes in elite, high-level events.Jaxson thrives in big moments and is only beginning to unlock his immense potential.”

Henegar’s recent accomplishments include qualifying as an individual for the 2025 UIL 5A Boys’ Golf State Tournament after a dominant performance at the 5A Region II tournament, where he finished 8-under par. This victory marked a historic moment, as he became the first boys’ golfer from Dallas ISD to win a regional tournament this century. He further solidified his position with top-four finishes at both the C.T. Pan Junior Championship and the C.T. Pan Foundation Junior Championship in July, carding a 3-under 213 at each event. He also tied for 13th at the AJGA Junior at Ratliff Ranch presented by Discover Odessa, finishing at 4-under 140.

The university believes the Abilene Christian experience will be a perfect fit for Henegar, fostering his growth athletically, academically, and spiritually – values that resonated strongly with both him and his family.

Matthew Lewis: A Proven Champion

Matthew lewis, from Lamar high School in Arlington, also qualified as an individual for the 2025 UIL 6A Boys’ Golf state Tournament. A three-time district champion, Lewis has consistently demonstrated his skill and competitive spirit, even setting the single-round scoring record for his school with a remarkable 65.

“Matthew ranks among the elite talents in Texas for his class,” Shaw said. “A dynamic athlete, he elevates his game in clutch moments – a hallmark of championship pedigree. With a proven track record of stellar scores, Matthew is poised to make an immediate impact on our roster.”

Lewis boasts an impressive record of over 20 junior golf victories, including a playoff win at the Fort Worth City Championship this past July. Beyond his athletic achievements, Lewis is a dedicated student, a member of the National Honor Society, and actively volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Tarrant County.

“I chose ACU because I wanted a school where I will grow in my faith and also get a very good education while playing the sport I have dedicated my life to,” Lewis explained. “I love the smaller school environment that is structured around Christ. I also love the world-class golf facilities and coaching staff.”

Lewis’s family also has a strong athletic background, with his mother, Abbey Lewis, having played volleyball at Lindenwood University, his father, Shane Lewis, wrestling at Lindenwood, and his uncle, Robb Catalano, playing baseball at St. Edward’s University.

The addition of Henegar and Lewis signals a radiant future for Abilene Christian men’s golf, as the program continues to attract top talent and build a tradition of success.
