The assessment of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) is unmistakable. “The BVG does not see any sensible use cases for a cable car network in Berlin,” it says in a Senate paper that is available to the Berliner Zeitung. The existing cable car in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district has “hardly any traffic significance”. In addition, it has so far been in severe deficit, as official figures show. Nevertheless, the new red-green-red coalition wants to examine where further routes could be built. Politicians are already waiting with concrete proposals. But does Berlin really need more cable cars?
