Amazon to Distribute $2.5 Billion to Prime Subscribers Following FTC Settlement

Amazon will begin issuing payments totaling $2.5 billion to some customers as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), resolving allegations of deceptive enrollment practices related to its Amazon Prime subscription service. Payments are scheduled to be distributed between November 12 and December 24.
FTC Alleges Misleading Enrollment and Cancellation Practices
The settlement stems from a 2023 lawsuit filed by the FTC, which alleged that Amazon misled consumers into unknowingly enrolling in Prime memberships and subsequently made the cancellation process unnecessarily difficult. According to reports, the online retail giant will pay $1 billion in civil penalties and allocate $1.5 billion directly to affected customers.
“Our settlement required Amazon to pay those people who clearly qualify without them having to do anything,” a senior official at the FTC stated. “So those people are getting the automatic payments.”
Who is Eligible for a Payment?
To qualify for a payment, customers must have signed up for an Amazon Prime subscription between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, through one of several “challenged enrollment flows.” These include the universal Prime decision page, the shipping selection page, a single-page checkout process, or the Prime Video enrollment flow. Eligible customers will be notified of their payment eligibility via email and will receive funds through PayPal or Venmo.
The amount of the payment is capped at $51 per individual, according to multiple news outlets.
Future Claims Process
Those who believe they are eligible but did not receive an automatic payment will be notified between December 24, 2025, and January 23, 2026, and given the opportunity to submit a claim. A company spokesperson confirmed this timeline, stating that Amazon is committed to ensuring eligible customers receive their due compensation.
Amazon Responds to the Settlement
Amazon agreed to the settlement in September, releasing a statement asserting its commitment to legal compliance and customer innovation. The company also emphasized its ongoing efforts to simplify both the sign-up and cancellation processes for Prime memberships.
“Amazon and our executives have always followed the law and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers,” a company release stated. “We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership.”
This settlement marks a significant outcome in the FTC’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers from deceptive online practices and underscores the importance of transparent subscription services.
