In the shadow of the war in Ukraine: Russia is trying to use the nuclear deal with Iran as a tool to deal with the West in the Ukraine crisis, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported today (Monday).
In response, Iranian officials told the news agency that Russia’s demands in the nuclear talks in Vienna were “not constructive”, adding that Moscow’s “intervention” was intended to secure its interest in other areas.
The report also shows that after months of negotiations in Vienna, the nuclear agreement was expected to be signed in the coming days. But Russia’s unexpected request to exempt economic trade with Iran from the sanctions imposed on it following its invasion of Ukraine has complicated matters.
Meanwhile, referring to the extensive Western sanctions imposed on Russia, the Russian foreign minister said Sergei Lavrov Because Moscow wants a guarantee from the United States that the new sanctions will not affect its rights under the nuclear deal with Iran.

“We call on the United States to provide a written guarantee that the latest sanctions will not infringe on our right to free and comprehensive trade with Iran and our investment and technical and military cooperation with that country,” he said.
According to Lavrov, trade between Iran and Russia should be exempt from sanctions, and it is almost certain that the West will reject this request as it creates a huge gap in the sanctions process against Russia. In that case, Moscow could veto the entire nuclear deal.
U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken Rejected Russia’s request as irrelevant and said that the sanctions imposed on Russia for its attack on Ukraine had nothing to do with Iran’s nuclear deal.
