Windows 11 Drops Support for Legacy Printer Drivers, Potentially Stranding Older Devices

Microsoft is phasing out support for V3 and V4 printer drivers in Windows 11, a move announced in September 2023 that is now taking effect with the January update. While the vast majority of users won’t be impacted, those relying on older printers may find their devices are no longer compatible with the latest operating system.

The change affects PCs running versions 24H2 and 25H2 of Windows 11, with the rollout occurring gradually as the update becomes more widely available. This “clean up” of printer drivers is intended to improve system security and stability, but could leave some users facing compatibility issues.

A History of Legacy Drivers

The V3 drivers originated with Windows Vista, while V4 drivers were commonly distributed with Windows 8. Despite their age, printer manufacturers often favored V3 drivers due to their perceived flexibility and compatibility with various tools. However, these older driver architectures have become increasingly problematic.

According to reports, these legacy drivers have long been a security vulnerability. V3 models, in particular, deeply integrate into the system and operate with elevated privileges, making them attractive targets for malicious actors. Several critical vulnerabilities within the Windows printing subsystem have previously allowed for privilege escalation and remote code execution.

Strengthening Windows 11 Security

By ending support for V3 and V4 drivers, Microsoft aims to reduce the overall attack surface of Windows 11, limit the potential for system compromise, and simplify the maintenance of a historically fragile component. “Microsoft warned in September 2023 that these drivers were now obsolete and would no longer be supported at all in the future. And the future is now,” a company release stated.

This means printers that exclusively rely on these older driver types may cease to function correctly on Windows 11. Microsoft acknowledges that while most modern printers utilize more contemporary architectures, some older devices may still be in use in schools, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), or even forgotten offices.

What to Do If Your Printer Is Affected

Microsoft recommends contacting the device manufacturer to inquire about updated drivers. In some cases, however, the only solution may be to purchase a new printer. While inconvenient, this move underscores Microsoft’s commitment to bolstering the security and reliability of the Windows 11 ecosystem.
