Windows 11 Redesigned Search Lets Users Change Settings From Taskbar

Beginning October 7, 2026, Windows Insiders can test a redesigned Windows 11 Search built on WinUI 3, bringing faster performance, a single-list layout, typo correction improvements, and inline quick settings actions directly to the taskbar.

Microsoft has rebuilt the Windows Search experience using WinUI 3, trading the older multi-pane layout for a streamlined single list designed to surface apps, files, and settings faster.

The updated search tool functions much like a third-party app launcher, allowing users to execute commands without opening separate menus. Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team at Microsoft, noted during a demonstration that the new experience is built for speed and forms part of an effort to modernize core operating system components. Microsoft’s Windows lead Pavan Davuluri also discussed the new capabilities on stage.

Taskbar Actions and System Controls

Testers can type everyday phrases to alter hardware and display states right from the taskbar instead of forcing users to dig through the main Settings application.

Windows Search Can Change Settings—But It’s Still a Preview
  • Type “switch to dark mode” to change the system appearance.
  • Type “turn on Bluetooth” to activate wireless connectivity.
  • Type “dim my screen” to lower display brightness.
  • Type “mute” to silence system audio.
  • Type “arrange windows on screen” to organize open applications.

Additional workspace commands include minimizing all open windows, turning on Night Light, and adjusting microphone sliders.

Removed Preview Pane Reduces Visual Clutter

Visually, the most striking modification is the removal of the bulky preview pane that previously occupied the right side of the search window. Internal usage metrics revealed that nearly all user clicks occurred within the left-hand results list, prompting a layout consolidation that reduces visual clutter.

Under the hood, the migration to WinUI 3 yields substantial improvements in performance and memory usage without introducing software bloat. Search algorithms have also been upgraded to better handle typographical errors and synonyms, making it easier to locate exact files or application shortcuts.

Insider Preview Channels Limit Feature Availability

The feature began rolling out on October 7, 2026, but availability is strictly limited. Testers must be enrolled in specific Windows Insider preview channels and operating in English.

Insider Channel Required Build Number
Experimental Build 26340.9616
Experimental (26H1) Build 28120.3181

Eligible Insiders can try the five actions, test how reliably they work, and submit feedback through Feedback Hub under Desktop Environment > Search. At this stage, the modernized search interface is restricted entirely to the taskbar; invoking search from the Start menu continues to trigger the legacy interface.

Roadmap for Future Updates

Microsoft plans to layer additional capabilities onto the search framework over the coming months. Optional Copilot integrations are also slated for select markets, with responses appearing directly within the user interface.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed a definitive timeline for a general commercial release. Wider integration into the Start menu alongside adaptive taskbar positioning is scheduled to roll out in 2027.
