A significant update, KB5067036, rolled out in late October for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, bringing a host of improvements, most notably a completely redesigned Start menu. The centerpiece of this update is a reimagined Start menu designed to offer a more streamlined and personalized experience. According to a company release, the redesigned menu prioritizes pinned apps, giving them more visual space. Users now have the option to hide the “recently opened files” section, decluttering the interface. Below this, a neatly organized overview of all installed programs is available, with the ability to group applications for easier navigation. A dedicated widget displaying phone facts now floats alongside the menu, offering quick access to mobile connectivity.
Enhanced System Indicators and Explorer Functionality
Beyond the Start menu, several other key areas of Windows 11 have been refined. Battery status indicators are now color-coded for at-a-glance information: green for charging, yellow for power saving mode, and red for low battery. Users can also choose to display the charge status as a percentage directly on the main panel – a feature the development team has been testing as January. These new indicators also appear on the lock screen.
The Explorer home screen is also receiving an upgrade, now displaying recommended files for users signed in with a Microsoft account. This functionality has been extended to support local user accounts as well, though it will not be immediately available in the european Economic Area. Streamlined Settings and improved Security
Microsoft has also made subtle but impactful changes to the Settings app. The “Email and accounts” section has been renamed to “Your accounts” for clarity.
On the security front, admin protection is now available, though it remains disabled by default. This feature, previously tested in the Dev and Beta channels as May, is intended to bolster system security. Performance Boosts and Bug Fixes
The update also addresses several performance issues. The main panel should now load faster when waking the computer from sleep mode, thanks to underlying optimizations. A long-standing bug affecting the “Update and Shutdown” command has also been resolved, ensuring that computers reliably shut down after completing system updates – a problem that reportedly persisted for at least two years.
Copilot+ and Regional Limitations
