A severe cold wave is poised to grip much of South Korea, with temperatures expected to plummet below freezing in several major cities and strong winds exacerbating the chill. The Korea meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued warnings and advisories, urging residents to prepare for hazardous conditions lasting through Thursday, November 21st.
The frigid conditions arrived on November 17th, with Seoul already experiencing a chilly 2 degrees Celsius. This marks a notable drop in temperature and signals the arrival of winter’s first major cold snap.
Sub-Zero Temperatures Forecast for Major Cities
The KMA predicts the lowest temperatures on the morning of November 18th will range from -8 to 5 degrees Celsius across the country. Daytime highs will struggle to reach double digits, peaking at only 4 to 12 degrees Celsius. Perceived temperatures, factoring in strong winds, will feel even colder.
for the first time this fall,Seoul,Incheon, and Daejeon are bracing for sub-zero morning temperatures. Seoul is forecast to hit -3 degrees Celsius, with a wind chill making it feel like -7 degrees Celsius. Incheon residents can expect temperatures between -1 and 6 degrees Celsius, while daejeon will see a low of -2 to 7 degrees Celsius. Further south, Gwangju will range from 3 to 8 degrees Celsius, Daegu from 0 to 7 degrees Celsius, Ulsan from 0 to 8 degrees Celsius, and Busan from 2 to 10 degrees Celsius.
Cold Wave Warnings and precipitation
A cold wave warning has been issued for parts of yeongnam, specifically centered on gangwon, North Chungcheong Province, and North Gyeongsang Province. These warnings are triggered when minimum temperatures are expected to fall by more than 10 degrees to 3 degrees Celsius or lower, or when temperatures remain at -12 degrees Celsius or below for at least two consecutive days.
In addition to the intense cold, occasional rain or snow is anticipated along the west coast of South Chungcheong Province, western Jeolla Province, and on Jeju Island. The heaviest precipitation – between 5 to 10 mm – is expected in Jeju, Ulleungdo, and dokdo.the west coast of Jeollabuk-do, southern Jeollabuk-do inland, gwangju, and western Jeollanam-do could see around 5 mm of precipitation, while the west coast of Chungcheongnam-do may receive less than 5 mm, and the West Sea around 1 mm.
Health and agricultural Concerns
The KMA emphasized the importance of health precautions during this period of rapid temperature change. “You must be careful about health management due to rapid temperature changes,” a senior official stated. Concerns also extend to agriculture, with a risk of freezing impacting crops, particularly in the inland areas of Gyeonggi Province. “Ice may freeze mainly in the inland part of Gyeonggi Province,” the KMA warned, urging farmers to take preventative measures.
The cold weather is expected to persist until Thursday, November 20th, with some inland and mountainous regions.
Why did this cold wave occur? A shift in weather patterns brought frigid air from the north down into the Korean peninsula. The KMA attributes the cold snap to a strong high-pressure system over Siberia.
Who is affected? The entire nation of South Korea is experiencing the cold wave, but the impact is most severe in the northern and inland regions. Residents, farmers, and travelers are all affected.
