Winter Weather Forecast: Mild Start & Weekly Check

Mild Winter ahead? Europe Braces for Calmer,Cloudier Weather

A shift in weather patterns is bringing a respite from recent wintry conditions across Europe, though a stark regional contrast is emerging as meteorological winter begins. While the continent overall is experiencing a milder start to the season, the southeast faces continued cold and frost.

The meteorological autumn concluded with November registering one degree Celsius warmer then the average between 1961 and 1990. Despite receiving only 70 percent of the typical rainfall, the continent enjoyed above-average sunshine – around 130 percent of the normal levels. This resulted in a positive temperature deviation of just over one degree for autumn 2025. Regional variations were significant, with the west and southwest receiving the most precipitation and the northeast and southwest basking in the most sunshine.

Regional Forecast: A Tale of Two Extremes

A strong high-pressure system over Eastern Europe is largely responsible for the anticipated calmer weather. This system is expected to bring predominantly dry, though frequently enough cloudy, conditions to much of the continent. However, the west and northwest will intermittently experience rain from low-pressure systems.

Temperatures are currently mild for this time of year in many areas, reaching up to 10 degrees Celsius. Conversely, the southeast is experiencing early winter conditions, with maximum temperatures hovering just above freezing and widespread frost expected overnight. This dual pattern is predicted to persist through the coming weekend.

reader question:– is the warmer autumn impacting snowpack in the Alps? Reduced early-season snowfall could affect ski tourism and water resources later in the year, though current forecasts don’t indicate a complete absence of winter precipitation.

Day-by-Day Breakdown

Monday night: Scattered rain is expected in the southeast, with the possibility of snowfall at elevations below 1,000 meters. Showers may also develop in the northwest.Conditions will generally be dry and frosty elsewhere, with a risk of slippery roads due to ice. Fog is highly likely to form later in the evening.

Monday: South of the low mountain ranges, conditions are expected to remain stable, with periods of sunshine. Where fog dissipates, dry conditions will prevail. Though, thicker clouds will move into the west and northwest during the afternoon, perhaps bringing rain, particularly along the North Sea coast. Strong to stormy winds are also forecast for these areas. Temperatures will range from 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, cooler in mountainous regions and areas experiencing persistent fog.

Tuesday: The cloud cover will expand further north and west, bringing localized rainfall. From the Upper Rhine to brandenburg, conditions will be drier and sunnier, though fog might potentially be present. Temperatures within the continuous fog will remain just above freezing, while other areas will experience milder temperatures between 5 and 9 degrees Celsius.

Wednesday: Little change is anticipated. The northwest will continue to experience dense clouds and occasional light showers, with temperatures remaining mild at 5 to 9 degrees Celsius. The south and east will see a mix of sunshine and fog, with significantly colder temperatures, potentially remaining at or just above freezing in areas with persistent fog.

Thursday & Friday: Sunny intervals are expected to decrease slightly in the south and east, but conditions will remain largely dry. Rain is most likely to continue in the northwest. Temperatures will range from a frigid 0 to 3 degrees Celsius in the mountains and areas with persistent fog, to a milder 9 degrees Celsius in the west. Frosty and slippery conditions are expected overnight, particularly in the south and east.

Weekend: Cloudy or foggy conditions are expected to continue through the weekend, with occasional showers, especially in the western half of the continent. Maximum temperatures w
