A potential new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is stirring up excitement over a decade after the game’s initial release. Multiple sources indicate CD Projekt Red is developing significant new content for the beloved RPG, potentially taking players to a previously hinted-at region.
A Decade-Late Journey to Zerrikania?
CD Projekt Red may be revisiting a long-discussed area of the Witcher universe, offering a fresh adventure for fans.
- Reports suggest a new Witcher 3 expansion is in development.
- The expansion may center around the region of Zerrikania, a vast realm east of the Northern Kingdoms and Nilfgaard.
- Zerrikania has been subtly referenced in the game and lore, hinting at dragons and unique cultures.
- CD Projekt Red has not officially confirmed the expansion.
Last week, discussion began after comments from Borys Nieśpielak, a well-regarded source of Polish games industry information, sparked questions about a 2026 release. A Noble Securities analyst then reinforced the possibility, stating they were “100 percent certain” CD Projekt Red would release substantial new content this year.
Now, information from IGN Poland suggests developers at CD Projekt Red have previously expressed interest in exploring Zerrikania. While not new information, its resurfacing alongside the current rumors is noteworthy. The region, as described in the Witcher books, is a sprawling (human!) territory situated east of both the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire. It’s characterized by two massive forests – one nestled within a deep canyon and another at the base of the Fiery Mountains – a landscape ripe for an expansive open-world DLC.
What is Zerrikania known for in the Witcher universe? The region has already made subtle appearances in The Witcher 3. If Geralt doesn’t invite Letho to Kaer Morhen during the “Ghosts of the Past” quest, Letho mentions fleeing to Zerrikania. Additionally, players can acquire Zerrikania-inspired clothing as part of the free “alternative look for Ciri” DLC. Could these have been early hints of things to come?
Lore from the books – and, arguably, one season of the Netflix adaptation – suggests Zerrikania is home to dragons, revered as god-like beings but prone to causing chaos. This could naturally lead to a need for a Witcher, or perhaps even multiple Witchers, to intervene.
CD Projekt Red’s most recent release was the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, in late 2023. Cyberpunk 2077 itself also saw a successful launch on the Switch in 2025, with over three-quarters of sales being physical copies. Despite the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the game has surpassed 35 million sales and consistently appears on Steam’s best-sellers list.
When asked for comment, CD Projekt Red reiterated its standard policy, stating to Eurogamer, “it does not comment on rumour or speculation.” Whether this is a legitimate expansion or simply wishful thinking remains to be seen.
