The war in Ukraine has certainly contributed to the increase in the nuclear arsenal. The number of operational nuclear warheads in the world has increased in 2022, pushed in particular by Russia and China, according to a report published on Wednesday.
At the start of 2023, the nine official and unofficial nuclear powers held 9,576 nuclear warheads ready for use, equivalent to “more than 135,000 Hiroshima bombs”, according to the Nuclear weapons ban monitor published by the Norwegian NGO Norsk Folkehjelp.
