For me, Jil Sander is both the delicate and the strong.
We are in a certain phase of life that can only be survived with intelligence, humor and sportsmanship.
The fact that Jil is celebrating her 80th birthday tomorrow is actually an outrage in life. Because Jil Sander stands for timelessness – perhaps like no other designer.

We both used our time: There were no other designers from Germany who were known all over the world. There was only one Karl, there is only one Wolfgang and certainly only one Jil.
We lived in Hamburg, the elegant Hanseatic city was our starting point. Hamburg was cool back then, Pöseldorf, where we were staying, was even cooler. We invented ourselves in Hamburg.

When Jil and I went through the nights in Hamburg together, she gave me the key to a new world for me. A key that I have never lost. Through Jil I learned the coolness that is the be-all and end-all in fashion.
Jil and I are very, very similar. You as a woman and me as a man. We both advertised with our faces. We both have self-made careers behind us.
We have both made ourselves into brands. I am very grateful that we used our time and were able to grow together artistically.

At the beginning Jil and I were close friends. But that’s also part of our story: we lost ourselves through business. I can still hear her saying to me:
“You could have been my assistant. But you had to go your own way…” The truth is also: For Jil, there could only ever be one queen. A queen who didn’t want or need a king.
Today Jil Sander is the Greta Garbo of fashion. No one really knows how she lives, where she lives and who she lives with.

I wish Jil all the best on her 80th birthday. I wish her a wonderful time that begins now. It is perhaps the most important time of life: a time of reflection and remembering.
I want my girlfriend back. We have so much to remember together – and so much to discuss. And today I think: Jil is so much more than my girlfriend.
Jil is like the big sister I never had. I have always admired Jil – and still admire her.
Happy birthday, dear Jil. I wish us many more years together!
The Joop!
In 1982, Wolfgang Joop presented his first ready-to-wear women’s collection. With his first perfume Joop! he finally made his name a brand in 1987.
In 1998 he sold his company for around 150 million German marks. He continued to work as a designer and founded the brands Wunderkind and Looks by Wolfgang Joop, among others
The Jil Sander brand
As a 23-year-old, Jil Sander opened her first boutique in Hamburg in 1967. She founded her company in 1968. The first collection followed in 1974. In 1989 she took her company public.
In 1999, Prada took over the majority of the shares for an estimated 275 million German marks. In 2004, Sander finally left her company
