The Swiss WolfWolf present Totentanz, a new work that successfully combines their classic “garage trash-punk” sound with flirtations with New Wave and synthesizers.
It has been five years since the duo released their last studio album: Metamorphosis (2019). Five years crossed by a pandemic that has a lot to do with the stylistic openness of Danse Macabrethe album that is released today.
From the first listens it can be seen that the compatriots of Heidi They irremediably maintain their primitive identity. Tavern hymns such as Danse Macabre o Holy Water (acid criticism of religion applying, let’s say unusual, uses to holy water), walks through dark forests inhabited by strange and smelly creatures of the night (The Devil Knows, It´s Hot in Hell o Vampire Love) or the gothic – trash metal delusions of Lost o My Imaginary Friend.

What we didn’t expect, and what really makes this album special, are the experiments with electronic music and the New Wave of the eighties. Although the keyboard melodies appear transversally during the forty minutes of the album, there are two songs that clearly exemplify this new dimension: Twenty One y The Falcon. The first could perfectly pass as a teenage anthem from the early eighties. Their leitmotif: dancing until dawn regardless of the next day. The second, great tribute to Falco (Viennese synth pop musician of the time) in particular and to the nightlife in general.
If we had to define with a single word Danse Macabre I would be FUNNY. Both the traditional wolfish formulas for splashing around in stinking swamps and the explorations of new and electronic sound worlds to “move your bones” work. We hope that their 2024 tour will drop them in Seville just as it happened in 2018 with the tour of The Cryptid Zoo. We will be there if that happens.
