A tense siege in a residential area of southwest Sydney concluded Friday morning after a home invasion and subsequent police operation. Authorities allege four masked men, one reportedly armed with a firearm, stormed a home on Wollongbar Avenue in Panania, leading to a multi-hour standoff and a notable police presence.
Police responded to calls from concerned neighbors just before 8:00 AM on Friday, initiating a comprehensive response that included hostage negotiators, aerial surveillance, and the deployment of the canine unit. The initial response was prompted by reports of an assault on a 24-year-old male resident and the theft of a substantial amount of cash.
Hours of Uncertainty as Police Surround Property
the situation escalated as officers where unable to promptly determine if the suspects remained inside the residence, which was also occupied by a 52-year-old woman. This uncertainty prompted a full-scale siege, with emergency vehicles strategically positioned throughout the neighborhood and on the front lawns of neighboring homes, fueled by fears of a potential shootout. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area during the operation.
According to bankstown Police Area Commander Rodney Hart, the siege concluded at approximately 11:30 AM after authorities determined the suspects had left the premises. “It was determined ‘after some time’ that the men were no longer in the house,” Hart stated. While the exact method of their departure remains unclear, police confirmed that the vehicle believed to have been used by the perpetrators – described as a dark sedan or station wagon – had already left the scene upon their arrival.
Targeted Robbery Suspected, Inquiry Underway
The police are currently treating the incident as a targeted robbery. “Although this investigation is quite young, we are very confident at this stage that this was a targeted robbery,” Hart explained.”An amount of cash has been stolen, we believe that’s what they were after.”
Authorities are actively pursuing the four suspects and have issued an appeal for public assistance in identifying and locating them. The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with facts related to the incident to come forward.
