A woman in her 40s is fighting for her life in hospital after a targeted arson attack at her home in Clondalkin, Dublin, on Thursday morning. The incident has sent shockwaves through the normally quiet Oak Downs estate, prompting a major examination by Gardaí and raising concerns about escalating violence.
Targeted Attack and Severe Injuries
The attack, described by a garda source as “horrific and frightening,” occurred at a residence in the Oak Downs estate. The woman sustained severe burns too her face and body after a man allegedly sprayed her wiht petrol and set it alight. Authorities have secured the scene and are actively working to identify and apprehend the perpetrator, who is believed to have fled on a motorbike.
A man who was also present in the house at the time of the attack suffered burns to his hands while attempting to extinguish the flames. He received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and is assisting with the investigation. Reports indicate the man has a history of criminal convictions and had previously received threats from criminal elements.
Calls for Justice and Community Shock
The severity of the attack has drawn condemnation from political leaders. Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan expressed his shock, stating he was deeply disturbed by the “horrific and vicious attack” and appealed to the public for any facts that could aid the investigation.
Tánaiste Simon Harris went further, describing a broader trend of violence, stating there is an “epidemic” in relation to violence against women in Ireland. Speaking to reporters, Harris characterized the Clondalkin attack as having a “devastating impact on the community” and emphasized that “there can be no place or no tolerance for such level of depravity and violence in our society or in our communities.”
Local Residents Express Fear and Disbelief
The attack has left residents of Oak Downs reeling. Local Sinn Féin councillor William Carey described the community as being in a state of shock. “The whole estate, the whole area here is in quite a lot of shock,” Carey said on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland. “Nobody expected anything like this to be happening in our area. It’s quite an idyllic type of estate… a lot of hardworking people, and to have this happening on the doorstep is wholly shocking.”
Carey emphasized the unexpected nature of the violence, noting that the area is not typically associated with high levels of crime. He relayed that a recent meeting with a local community garda indicated that incidents in the area were considered “very low key” and of minimal concern. Residents are now reportedly feeling “angry,” “annoyed,” and “shocked” by the incident.
