Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign began with a disappointing result on Tuesday,as a one-goal lead slipped away in a 2-1 defeat at home to Lyon.Despite a radiant start and a seventh-minute goal from Alessia Russo, defensive errors proved costly, allowing the french champions to secure the victory through a brace from Melchie Dumornay.
The match at Meadow Park initially promised a positive start for the Gunners. Russo’s composed finish, set up by a clever one-two with Beth Mead and Mariona Caldentey, ignited hopes for a strong European showing. However, the momentum shifted as the first half progressed, exposing vulnerabilities in Arsenal’s defense.
First-Half Struggles
Arsenal’s early dominance was evident in their attacking fluidity. Mead’s intricate passing play with Caldentey created the opening for Russo, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. But Lyon quickly responded, testing goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar with efforts from Selma Bacha and Dumornay.
The turning point arrived in the 18th minute when Van Domselaar’s misplaced pass gifted Dumornay a scoring opportunity.Although the initial shot was saved, Dumornay capitalized on the rebound to equalize. Further defensive lapses allowed Dumornay to extend Lyon’s lead, bending a shot into the top left corner after a turnover involving Caldentey and Katie Reid.
despite creating further chances – including a volley from Caldentey saved by Christiane Endler and a shot over the bar from Chloe Kelly – Arsenal failed to regain control before halftime. Lyon continued to press, with Tabitha Chawinga coming close on multiple occasions and Marie-Antoinette Katoto testing Van Domselaar.
Second-Half Fight Falls Short
Arsenal emerged for the second half with renewed energy, but were unable to convert their pressure into goals. Russo’s header from a Caldentey corner was comfortably collected by Endler, and a subsequent strike from Caldentey was tipped over the bar.Managerial changes followed, with Caitlin Foord and Olivia Smith replacing Kelly and Mead in an attempt to spark a comeback.
However, Lyon remained a constant threat.Katoto and Dumornay continued to probe Arsenal’s defense, while Kadidiatou Diani and Korbin Shrader also tested Van Domselaar. Further substitutions – kyra cooney-Cross and Stina Blackstenius for Caldentey and Russo – were made in the 75th minute, followed by Katie McCabe replacing Taylor Hinds.
Despite six minutes of added time, Arsenal couldn’t find the elusive equalizer. Foord’s late volley from a McCabe free-kick sailed wide, sealing a frustrating start to their Champions League journey.
