TEMPE – Sun Devil Women’s Tennis defeated San Diego, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center in its only home match in February. Arizona State University has won 10 of its last 11 matches against San Diego, according to the school’s athletic website.

The Sun Devils started strong in doubles play, earning a 6-2 victory from graduate student Vivian Ovrootsky and junior Emilia Tverijonaite on court one. Sophomore Lily Taylor and junior Karsyn Evans then clinched the doubles point for ASU with a 7-5 win, battling back from a 2-5 deficit. A doubles match on court two was left unfinished with the score tied 6-5.
In singles competition, No. 16 Emilia Tverijonaite earned her third dual win of the spring season, defeating No. 94 Hannah Read 6-4, 6-0. Sara Svetac followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win, giving Arizona State a 3-1 advantage. Ovrootsky then secured the match victory for the Sun Devils with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets win on court two.
Lily Taylor added another point for ASU with a 7-5, 6-3 victory on court four, and Karsyn Evans solidified the win with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win on court six. Maria Shmakova of San Diego won the remaining singles match, defeating Zlata Bartanusz 6-2, 6-3.
