And several ways to protect yourself from HIV. This is the theme of the campaign launched by the Ministry of Health to mark World AIDS Day, celebrated on Friday (1st). Internal or external condoms, self-test or rapid test (RT) and the use of Pre-Exposure or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP/PEP) are some of the ways to prevent HIV. Look for a Basic Health Unit (UBS) and find out. If you have experienced a risk situation, such as having unprotected sex or sharing syringes, for example, get tested for HIV. If the risky sexual exposure occurred less than 72 hours ago, find out about HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). The diagnosis of HIV infection is made through blood collection or oral fluid. Laboratory tests and rapid tests detect antibodies against HIV in around 30 minutes. These tests are carried out free of charge by the Unified Health System (SUS), in public network units and in Testing and Counseling Centers (CTA). The Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) method consists of taking pills before sexual intercourse, which allow the body to be prepared to face possible contact with HIV, informs the Ministry of Health. In these cases, the person undergoes regular monitoring of health, with testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Furthermore, all people diagnosed with HIV have the right to start antiretroviral treatment immediately, and thus spare their immune system. These medications (cocktail) prevent the virus from replicating inside cells and thus prevent immunity from falling and AIDS from appearing. According to estimates, 1 million people live with HIV in Brazil. Of this total, 650,000 are male and 350,000 female. In the last ten years, the country recorded a 25.5% drop in the AIDS mortality rate, which went from 5.5 to 4.1 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, according to the new Epidemiological Bulletin on HIV/Aids presented by the ministry in November 30th.
