Like every November 15, today World Alcohol-Free Day is celebrated for another year, with the aim of raising awareness among the population of the harmful effects of alcohol consumption and promoting social responsibility in relation to this issue.

According to the World Health Organization, 3 million deaths occur worldwide each year due to harmful alcohol consumption, which represents 5.3% of all deaths. Additionally, it is a causal factor in more than 200 diseases and disorders. The latest Survey on Alcohol and Other Drugs in Spain (EDADES), from 2022, indicates that 93.2% of the population between 15 and 64 years of age states that they have consumed alcoholic beverages at some point in their lives, which makes alcohol the psychoactive substance with the highest prevalence of consumption.

The WHO emphasizes the importance of developing, testing and evaluating effective interventions against the harmful consumption of alcohol, as well as the generation, compilation and dissemination of scientific information about the consumption and dependence of this substance with its health consequences. and social that entails.

In this sense, we share an infographic created by the Ministry of Health to calculate whether there is risky consumption of alcohol. Risky consumption is considered to be that which increases the chances of having health problems in the future (cancer, mental health problems, etc.), including social and economic consequences for the person who consumes or for others. This consumption is > 40 grams/day (4 UBEs/day) in men and > 20-25 grams/day (2-2.5 UBEs/day) in women. It is also considered risky consumption when alcoholic beverages are consumed intensively, that is, when ≥ 60 grams (6 UBEs) are consumed on one occasion (4-6 hours) in men and ≥ 40 grams (4 UBEs) in women.
