Velva: The 26th World Badminton Championships are taking place in Velva, Spain. In the men’s singles semifinals, 28-year-old Kitambi Srikanth, 28, of India, clashed with 20-year-old Lakshaya Sen, a compatriot. The first set was won by Lakshya Sen 22-17. But Kitambi Srikanth, who showed experience in the next 2 sets, won 21-14, 21-17. With this victory he became the first player to reach the final of the World Championship Series. Lakshaya Sen, who lost in the semifinals, won the bronze medal.
In the other semifinal, 22-year-old Lo Keane Yu of Singapore, ranked 22nd, advanced to the final, beating No. 3 seed Antonsen of Denmark 23-21, 21-14. In today’s final, Kidambi will face Srikanth-Lokin Yu in a multi-examination. There is an expectation that Srikanth will create the record of being the first Indian player to win the title. If Srikanth wins the final, he will get a gold medal with a prize money of Rs 91 lakh. Failure to do so will result in a silver medal of Rs 45.60 lakh.
