The Solidarity Organization for Human Rights pointed to the losses inflicted on cultural and civilizational heritage as a result of the storm that struck Derna and the villages of Jabal Akhdar last September.
The organization said in a statement today, on the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, that several public and private offices were destroyed in the region, such as the public library in the municipality of Al-Qayqab and the public library attached to the Al-Sahaba Mosque in Derna.
In addition, the King Idris Library in Derna, which was supposed to open before the end of the previous year, was destroyed, according to the organization.
According to the organization, thousands of “precious” books, references, and periodicals in private libraries were lost as a result of the floods, most notably the “irreplaceable” library of Sheikh Mustafa Al-Trabelsi, the library of Sheikh Makki Hassan, the library of Sheikh Muhammad Al-Qadiri, and others.
The organization pointed out the presence of thousands of social and historical documents contained in personal safes before they went to the sea due to the floods. Nearly 3,000 historical documents of the types of sales, interests and arguments were lost in the office of contract editor Nouri Kweisah alone, according to the organization.
In another context, the organization complained about the restriction on publishing freedoms, calling on the government to implement rights protection legislation.
