Massive flooding in Brazil caused massive casualties, including 83 deaths.

According to the Washington Post (WP) and CNN on the 6th (local time), the Civil Defense of Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state announced that at least 83 people were killed and 276 injured in the flood. As search operations are still underway, the number of casualties is expected to continue to increase.

According to the Civil Defense Corps, 111 people went missing and about 121,000 people were evacuated due to this flood. It was revealed that houses, roads and traffic were destroyed in 345 areas, affecting approximately 850,000 people.

The fire department and military are carrying out rescue operations to control the situation. “About 1,000 firefighters went on rescue missions,” said José Carlos Saleh, deputy commander of Rio Grande do Sul’s military fire department. “Every time the rain stopped, we launched an operation to save as many people as possible.”

At the scene, a rescue team was captured transporting people and pets by boat through the ocher-colored water that filled the road between buildings. Approximately 14,000 soldiers were deployed to supply survival necessities such as food and water.

Brazil’s star soccer players participated in a fundraising campaign for disaster victims. Players including Vinicius Junior, Neymar, and Ronaldinho appeared in a promotional video for a donation platform launched by the Brazilian Football Federation, urging them to raise money for flood victims.

Authorities said the current situation is likely to last for several weeks and could worsen. Scientists predict that water levels in the Guaiba River, Rio Grande do Sul’s main river, will not fall below the flood threshold of 3 meters before the end of May. It is also predicted that within a few days the temperature will drop to less than 10 degrees, increasing the risk of hypothermia.

Recently, Brazil has been suffering from record-breaking heavy rains and subsequent floods, landslides, and severe droughts. Experts say it is highly likely that this phenomenon is caused by climate change. Last September, Rio Grande do Sul lost at least 31 people to a cyclone. In the state of Sao Paulo, heavy rains led to landslides and flooding, killing more than 50 people.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Dasiouba blamed the disaster on the global community’s failure to properly respond to climate change. President Lula said, “Poor countries that emit almost no greenhouse gases are suffering from the pollution of rich countries.”
