At least four people were injured in an explosion near a construction site near a train station in Munich, Germany. The train service in the city has been stopped, the condition of one of the injured is serious. This was reported by the fire brigade.
The blast, which is estimated to have been caused by a bomb left over from World War II, prompted officials to suspend all rail services. The four injured people worked at the scene, and as mentioned, one of them was seriously injured.
“An air bomb from World War II was the cause of the explosion,” Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herman said during a visit to the site. According to local media reports, workers accidentally hit a 250-pound bomb while drilling.
The German train service Deutsche Bahn said that train service was stopped as a precaution, as the explosion occurred near a bridge where all incoming and outgoing trains from the station must pass.
Officials have not yet announced why the bomb was not detected ahead of time. The discovery of bombs left over from fighting during World War II is a fairly common occurrence in Germany, although explosions in which people are injured are extremely rare. In recent years, a number of World War II bombs have been found and evacuated in a controlled manner without casualties.
