Van Aert & Van der Poel Set for Cyclocross Showdown Despite Pre-Season Setbacks

A challenging pre-season for both Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel has cast a shadow over the upcoming cyclocross season, but the rivalry is set to ignite with both champions planning early December returns. The anticipation builds as fans await the first of what promises to be several thrilling head-to-head clashes this winter.

As winter illnesses sweep through the peloton, Van Aert’s preparation for the cyclocross season has been disrupted. The Visma – Lease a Bike rider is scheduled to make his competitive return at the Antwerp World Cup on December 20th, but recent reports from Dutch and Belgian media indicate he was forced to miss several training days due to illness.

Van Aert himself acknowledged the setback, sharing on Strava that he had taken his “first pedal strokes in a few days,” accompanied by a thermometer emoji. While the impact on his performance at the Antwerp race remains uncertain, the 31-year-old still has over two weeks to regain his peak form before his highly anticipated face-off with Van der Poel.

The rivalry will first play out in Namur, where Van der Poel is expected to return to competition earlier, on December 14th. This will be the first of five scheduled meetings between the two titans this winter, with subsequent races planned for Hofstade, Loenhout, Mol, and Zonhoven. Van Aert also intends to compete in Heusden-Zolder, Dendermonde, and the Belgian championships in early January. His team has not yet ruled out participation in the world championships in Hulst, the Netherlands, though a similar late decision was made last season.

Meanwhile, Van der Poel has confirmed his cyclocross season plans after a period of uncertainty. Alpecin–Deceuninck announced the news alongside the unveiling of Premier Tech as a new cosponsor, stating that Van der Poel’s recent training block has alleviated any concerns about his readiness. According to team manager Christoph Roodhooft, the world champion required a longer recovery period than usual but is now regaining his competitive edge.

While the Namur World Cup is confirmed, Van der Poel’s schedule beyond that may be adjusted to prioritize his road preparation. However, a start at the world championships in Hulst – where he has the opportunity to establish a new all-time record – is considered highly probable.

The stage is set for a captivating cyclocross season, with both Van Aert and Van der Poel navigating pre-season challenges as they prepare to battle for supremacy on the challenging winter courses.
