NIU Wrestling Secures Fourth Place Finish at National Duals Behind Baker’s Undefeated Run

the Northern Illinois University wrestling team (4-5) showcased resilience and individual brilliance at the national Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, this past Sunday. led by the dominant performance of no. 28 redshirt junior markel Baker,the Huskies posted a 3-2 record and finished fourth among eight invited teams.

“We are building toward where we want to be,” a senior official stated, reflecting the program’s trajectory. “These guys are wrestling hard. It was fun to be immersed in that team first environment.”

Narrow Victory Over Harvard Kicks Off Duals

NIU began the tournament with a hard-fought 19-14 victory over Harvard University. The Huskies jumped out to an early lead, establishing a score of 19-4 at the 6:31 mark. Redshirt freshman Charles Curtis added to the Huskies’ tally with a 6-2 decision over Harvard senior Dante Frinzi at 141 pounds. After a series of setbacks,redshirt junior Tommy bennett delivered a crucial fall against first-year Ben Smith at 174 pounds,shifting the momentum. Ultimately, No. 22 graduate student Devon Dawson sealed the victory for NIU, defeating junior Logan Marissal by technical fall in 3:52.

Huskies Dominate Central Michigan, 20-14

The Huskies continued their strong showing with a decisive 20-14 win over Central Michigan University. This matchup saw NIU secure victories over two ranked opponents. Baker once again led the charge, defeating No. 33 redshirt junior Andrew Austin with a commanding 15-4 major decision.

Curtis followed suit,securing a 4-1 decision against sophomore Nick Blackburn at 141 pounds. Redshirt junior Landen Johnson contributed a 12-1 majority decision victory over freshman Seth Larson at 157 pounds, while Bennett continued his winning streak with a 7-1 decision against redshirt junior Nick Mariendfeld. A narrow 10-7 decision by redshirt junior Caleb Roe over junior Wyatt Ferguson at 184 pounds further solidified the Huskies’ lead. dawson remained undefeated, edging out No. 32 redshirt senior Bryan Caves 7-6 in a closely contested bout.

Jackrabbits Prove Too Strong, 26-10

Despite a valiant effort, NIU fell to the No. 8 South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 26-10. though, the Huskies still managed to secure three individual victories. Baker extended his undefeated run, defeating redshirt freshman Cale Seaton 4-2. Redshirt freshman Lucan O’Brien earned a 10-2 majority decision win over redshirt freshman Logan Swenson at 149 pounds, and redshirt sophomore Brett Smith secured an 11-8 victory over freshman Jacob Herm at 165 pounds.

Complete Sweep of Campbell University

NIU delivered a dominant performance against Campbell University, achieving a resounding 53-0 sweep, aided by three forfeits. Baker kicked off the match with a 19-6 majority decision over graduate student Logan Heil. Curtis continued his strong performance, defeating senior Zander Phaturos 16-7 by majority decision. O’Brien added another victory with a 21-5 technical fall over sophomore Jonathan Chang in 6:33. Dawson swiftly defeated sophomore Sawyer VanRider in just 1:30. West, Smith, and redshirt freshman Dominic Heim also secured wins, completing the shutout.

Huskies Fall Short in Third Place Matchup

NIU concluded the National Duals with a 21-12 loss to Drexel University in the third-place matchup. Baker capped off his undefeated tournament run with a 5-1 decision over redshirt senior Kyle waterman. Johnson secured his second win of the weekend with an 8-3 decision over redshirt senior Luke Nichter. roe added another victory, narrowly defeating redshirt junior Ethan Wilson 5-3. Dawson secured the Huskies’ final win, defeating No. 28 redshirt junior Nate Schon 8-5 at 285 pounds.
