TCU Defeats West Virginia Volleyball in Straight Sets

The West Virginia University volleyball team (14-10, 2-10 big 12) was defeated by No. 16 TCU (18-7, 8-5 Big 12) in straight sets on Sunday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena. The Horned Frogs secured the victory with set scores of 25-16, 26-24, and 25-13, extending their winning record against the Mountaineers.
First Set Struggles Set the Tone
The opening set saw the Mountaineers struggle to find their rhythm offensively,managing nine kills on 29 swings. Despite receiving nine assists and a service ace, West Virginia’s offense was hampered by defensive pressure from TCU. the team recorded seven digs and one block in the first frame,ultimately falling short against a strong Horned Frog attack.
Second set Shows Promise, But Falls Short
The second set proved to be the Mountaineers’ most competitive of the match, showcasing their strongest offensive output. The squad tallied 16 kills on 46 attempts, alongside 16 assists. A resolute back-row effort resulted in 24 digs and two total blocks, but TCU narrowly edged out West Virginia with a 26-24 victory.
Third Set Decides the Match
West virginia attempted a late push in the third set, recording nine kills on 29 attempts, supported by eight assists and eight digs. However, the effort proved insufficient to extend the match, as TCU closed out the set 25-13 and secured the win.
Offensive and defensive Stats Reflect TCU Dominance
the Mountaineers finished with 34 kills on 104 attempts, resulting in a .154 hitting percentage. The offense was paced by 33 assists and three service aces, while the defense contributed 39 digs and three total blocks. the statistics highlight TCU’s overall control of the match.
Horning and Sheridan Lead Mountaineer Attack
Junior outside hitter Nina Horning and redshirt junior right side hitter Trinity Sheridan spearheaded the Mountaineer attack. horning led the team with 11 kills on 36 swings,adding two digs and one block for a total of 12.5 points. Sheridan contributed 10 kills on 28 attempts, along with seven digs and one block, finishing with 10.5 points.
Ibrahim Efficient in the Middle
Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim demonstrated efficiency in the middle, tallying four kills on nine attempts for a.444 hitting percentage. She led the team in blocking with two total blocks,contributing five points overall. junior middle blocker Maddy McGath added three kills and one block, also providing an assist and four digs for 3.5 points.
Supporting Players Contribute
Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott contributed four kills and two digs for four points, while junior middle blocker Lauren Bodily added one kill. Freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner provided one kill, one assist, and two digs. Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with a team-high 27 assists, adding one service ace, three digs, and one block. Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with a team-best 11 digs, while also contributing two assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter chipped in eight digs, one assist, and one service ace.
