Real Madrid’s Alonso Faces Mounting Pressure Amidst Losing Streak

Despite a show of support from his players, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is navigating a period of intense scrutiny following a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday. The loss leaves the team with only two wins in their last eight matches across all competitions, fueling criticism and prompting whistles from fans at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

Alonso addressed the team’s recent struggles, emphasizing his appreciation for their continued effort. “The team has not lost face of the game at any time. I have nothing to reproach,” he stated, acknowledging the disappointing results but maintaining optimism. “The results are not good, we are critical, self-demanding, but we have to continue working. It will pass, because everything passes.”

The pressure on Alonso is not new, he conceded. “It’s not something new,” the manager said, referring to the public’s discontent. “There have been other moments in which [the fans] have supported [us], we have felt that energy. We can understand it and we have to accept it, because here the demand is absolute.”

Recent reports in Spanish media have suggested internal disagreements within the squad, but these claims were quickly countered by a unified front from the players. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Raúl Asencio were among those publicly voicing their support for Alonso. Forward Rodrygo visibly demonstrated his allegiance, embracing the coach on the touchline after scoring during the match, a gesture he explained was intended to show the players’ solidarity.

Alonso acknowledged the inherent challenges of managing a club the size of Real Madrid. “We have to live with this situation,” he said. “When you are coach of Real Madrid you have to be prepared to face it, with integrity and self-criticism.” Despite the current difficulties, Alonso remains hopeful. “But we know that things can change. Despite the result I have seen positive things. We are there.”

Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Alavés on Sunday in La Liga, where they currently trail league leader Barcelona by four points after 16 games.
