Xbox Price Hike Looms as RAM Shortages Bite, While Sony Remains Unaffected
Table of Contents
Microsoft is facing potential further increases to the price of its Xbox Series consoles, adding to price adjustments already implemented in May and September. The looming threat stems from a global shortage of RAM – random access memory – with demand surging from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, leaving less supply for consumer electronics.
Microsoft has reportedly warned its retail partners about the possibility of increased costs for consumers, according to industry sources. The situation is particularly acute as AI companies are aggressively acquiring memory, driving up prices and potentially limiting availability for gaming hardware.
AI Demand Fuels Component Scarcity
The escalating demand for RAM is being driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers. These facilities require vast amounts of memory to power complex algorithms and machine learning processes. One analyst stated, “AI data centers are snapping up memory in huge numbers and leaving little left for consumer electronics.” This surge in demand has left manufacturers struggling to keep up, leading to price increases and potential supply disruptions.
According to reports, Microsoft “didn’t plan ahead at all,” leaving the company vulnerable to the current market conditions. A source close to the company warned that Xbox Series console prices could increase “soon, or supply could just entirely dry up.”
Interestingly, the RAM shortage doesn’t appear to be impacting all console manufacturers equally. Reports suggest Sony took a different approach, proactively securing a large supply of GDDR6 memory when prices were lower.
“From what I’ve heard, Sony planned ahead, bought up gobs of RAM near the bottom of the pricing, and thus they should be fine for months,” one industry insider revealed. This strategic foresight is reportedly the reason behind Sony’s ability to offer price cuts on the PlayStation 5 for Black Friday, a move they can afford because of their secured component supply.
“They aren’t just doing this as some extreme move or because sales are bad. They can afford to do it; apparently, they are not worried about the RAM shortage, at least in the short- to mid-term,” the source added.
Xbox Game Pass Costs Also on the Rise
The potential for another Xbox hardware price increase comes on the heels of a recent shake-up and price hike for Xbox Game Pass. The Game Pass Ultimate subscription now costs $29.99 / £22.99 per month, offering access to over 75 day-one releases annually, along with perks like Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. The service is also slated to receive improvements to its cloud gaming quality and a new Rewards program.

The confluence of rising hardware costs and subscription fees presents a challenging landscape for Xbox gamers. While Sony appears to have successfully navigated the RAM shortage, Microsoft faces a difficult path forward, potentially requiring further price adjustments or facing supply constraints as the demand for memory continues to escalate.
