Morocco’s strong participation in the 36th AU Summit and the 2nd conference of Heads of State and Government of the Climate Commission for the Sahel region in February this year in Addis Ababa illustrates the constructive role of the Kingdom in in favor of common African action in accordance with the Vision of HM King Mohammed VI who pleaded for “the emergence of a New Africa: a strong Africa, a bold Africa which takes charge of the defense of its interests, an influential Africa in the concert of Nations.
Thus, during this year the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, represented HM King Mohammed VI at the 2nd conference of Heads of State and Government of the Climate Commission for the Sahel region which was held on 17 February at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The Head of Government also represented HM King Mohammed VI at the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union held in Addis Ababa on February 18 and 19.
The Moroccan delegation taking part in this Summit was composed in particular of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the African Union and the ECA- UN, Mohamed Arrouchi and the Ambassador Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), Mohamed Methqal.
The highlight of the 2nd Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Climate Commission for the Sahel region was the Message addressed by His Majesty the King to the participants and read by the Head of Government.
At the end of this session, the 2nd Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Climate Commission for the Sahel region held on the sidelines of the African Union Summit, welcomed the pioneering role played by HM the King Mohammed VI for a strong and resilient Africa, notably through ambitious south-south cooperation.

The Conference also appointed HM King Mohammed VI to the panel of Heads of State to support the President of the Climate Commission for the Sahel region as part of strengthening advocacy relating to its operationalization.
During the 36th AU Summit, the efforts of HM King Mohammed VI in terms of migration were highlighted.
HM King Mohammed VI has since his appointment as Leader on the issue of Migration on the occasion of the 28th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), has not managed any effort to defend the interests of Africa and set the milestones for an avant-garde African policy on the migration issue, affirmed the Moroccan delegation before the 36th AU Summit.
His Majesty the King presented the African agenda on migration and developed a common African vision of migration and brought this African agenda to the multilateral scene, through the Marrakech Pact, underlined the Moroccan delegation.
The delegation of the Kingdom of Morocco highlighted the aspects concerning the monitoring of the implementation of the proposals contained in the African agenda on migration, in this case the African Observatory on Migration (OAM) and the relaunch of the proposal for the creation of a position of AU Special Envoy on migration, the promotion of the common African vision in the Euro-African bi-continental framework, the promotion of interactions between the African agenda on migration and the Marrakech Pact and the presentation of the main conclusions of the Forum on reducing remittance costs for the African diaspora, jointly organized by Morocco and Togo.
During this 36th AU Summit, Morocco said it was convinced that the institutional reform of the African Union is a vector of growth which should contribute to accelerating global economic and social transformation programs. of the African continent.
The vision of institutional reform of the AU that Morocco fully supports is based on a global approach in favor of development and the promotion of peace and stability on the Continent, underlined the Moroccan delegation.
In this context, Morocco considers that this reform should be inclusive, holistic, transparent and participatory, based on the principle of ownership and based on the parameters of realism and pragmatism, reiterated the Moroccan delegation.
The 36th AU Summit also adopted the Declaration of the AU Political Conference on Promoting the Nexus Between Peace, Security and Development in Africa, entitled “Tangier Declaration”.
The AU Summit urged the AU Commission to implement its conclusions and in this regard, invites partners of the Tangier process to strengthen their support for the implementation of projects relating to the nexus between peace, security and development.
On the sidelines of the meeting of the Executive Council of the AU as a prelude to the 36th Summit of the Union, Morocco, in collaboration with the African Union, organized at the headquarters of the pan-African organization a high-level event which was crowned by the creation of a Group of Friends on the intersecting challenges of climate change and the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, an initiative of the Kingdom.
The Group of Friends on the intersecting challenges of climate change and the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda which was launched “will allow senior officials from different sides to support this exercise so that the Women, Peace and Climate Change nexus can be a present element in all our interactions and at all levels”, underlined Mr. Bourita, during this high-level event which was marked by the participation of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of African States and European countries, the Vice Chairperson of the African Union Commission, African Union Commissioners, international partners, international organizations, UN Women and civil society.
The 36th Summit was also marked by the presentation of the annual report on the activities of the African Union (AU) and its organs for the period January-December 2022 which established the strong presence and the place of choice of the Kingdom within the continental organization.
Cited 21 times in the AU activities report, Morocco, under the visionary leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, is very active within the pan-African organization and present in several Union reports.
This strong presence of Morocco crowns the constructive work accomplished by the Kingdom which is present in the various organs of the pan-African organization such as the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the AU, Morocco being at its second three-year mandate after that of 2018-2020 where he actively contributed to the improvement of working methods and the establishment of good practices in this decision-making body of the Union.
Confirming the confidence placed in Morocco by AU member states, the Kingdom chairs the Subcommittee on Economic Affairs of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee.
Morocco also holds the first vice-presidency of the Specialized Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration of the African Union for the period 2021-2023.
The Kingdom was entrusted with the presidency of the Special Technical Committee responsible for Trade, Industry and mining resources of the Union and the first vice-presidency of the Specialized Technical Committee on the Civil Service, Local Authorities, Development Urban and Decentralization.
Morocco had also sat on the AU administrative tribunal with a Magistrate.
