A new police procedural promises to deliver high-stakes drama and stunning scenery as Apple TV+ launches “The Last Frontier” this Friday, October 10. The series, co-created by Jon Bokenkamp – known for his work on “The Blacklist” and its spin-off, “The Blacklist: Redemption” – plunges viewers into the remote Alaskan wilderness, where a small town finds itself under siege by escaped criminals.
A Neo-Western in the Last Frontier
“The Last Frontier” distinguishes itself by blending the conventions of a detective series with the visual and thematic elements of a neo-western. According to a company release, the show draws inspiration from the popularity of series like “Yellowstone,” offering a contemporary take on the classic Western genre. The setting itself – a little-known corner of the United States rarely depicted on screen – adds a unique layer of intrigue.
The narrative centers on US Marshal Frank Remnick, portrayed by Jason Clarke, tasked with protecting a quiet Alaskan town disrupted by the escape of dangerous inmates. These criminals fled following a plane crash during their transfer to a high-security prison, throwing the region into chaos.
Stellar Cast and Experienced Filmmakers
Clarke, described as one of the most underrated actors of his generation, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has previously delivered compelling performances in critically acclaimed films such as “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Oppenheimer,” as well as the television series “Catherine the Great,” where he played Grigori Potemkin alongside Helen Mirren.
Joining Clarke is a talented ensemble cast including Dominic Cooper (“Preacher”), Simone Kessell (“Yellowjackets”), and Alfre Woodard, an Oscar nominee for her work in “Marjorie” and known for her role in “Luke Cage.”
Notably, the first two episodes of “The Last Frontier” are directed by Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind the action films “Tyler Rake.” This directorial expertise promises a visually dynamic and action-packed series.
Weekly Releases on Apple TV+
Episodes of “The Last Frontier” will be released weekly, exclusively on Apple TV+. The series aims to offer a compelling blend of suspense, action, and character-driven drama, set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Alaskan landscape.
