Yemen Shakeup: Al-Alimi’s Dismissals & State Restructuring

by mark.thompson business editor

In a political earthquake that Yemen had not witnessed for decades, Rashad Al-Alimi, in just 48 hours, carried out the largest purge in the history of the modern state, overthrowing six of the most prominent military and civilian leaders on charges of high treason and conspiracy against national unity.

The most startling development was the removal of Aidaroos Al-Zubaidi from the Presidential Leadership Council and the formal accusation of high treason leveled against him – a first for a member of Yemen’s highest ruling body.

The sweeping dismissals included Lieutenant General Mohsen Al-Daari, the Minister of Defense, who was forced into immediate retirement. Also removed were Aden Governor Ahmed Hamid Lamlas, and the Ministers of Transport and Planning, Abdul Salam Humaid and Waad Badhib, all of whom will face investigation.

The shakeup extended to military leadership, with Major General Talib Saeed Bargash, Commander of the Second Military Region, and Major General Mohsen Marsa, Commander of the Ghaydah Axis, both dismissed, alongside several other leaders in Hadramaut and Al-Mahra.

Saudi journalist Malik Al-Ruqi asserted that recent unrest in Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra revealed the identities of those involved in the alleged conspiracy, emphasizing that those who supported the Yemeni state amidst intimidation and financial incentives would be crucial in restoring control of Sana’a.

Al-Ruqi stated: “Rashad Al-Alimi will be remembered in history, and it will remember Salem Al-Khanbashi, Amr bin Habrish, and the tribes, and it will remember all the Yemeni figures who stood up to the plan… The project is big and the plan is dangerous. Thank God for what was done, and thank God that Aidaroos was feeling extremely mad during this adventure he undertook, because it, in short, purified Yemen. The blood of our martyrs will not be wasted.”

The presidential decisions were prompted by the positions taken by the dismissed officials, who reportedly advocated for secession and posed a threat to Yemen’s legal framework and regional security, according to an official statement.

This decisive action is viewed as a pivotal moment in the Yemeni conflict, effectively resolving the conflict between proponents of a unified state and those pursuing secessionist agendas that exploited the current instability to undermine national unity.
